last of the series

We have finally come to the end of the photos I took during my last visit to eastern South Dakota and Blue Cloud Abbey. On my last full day, as I was driving back to the Abbey, I was greeted by some strange looking cattle. Later I was told they were Yaks.

"That was some party last night, wasn't it Mabel?"

Sandhill Cranes -- I can't believe it

I can't believe Minnesota DNR is opening a hunting season for these beautiful birds this fall.
Read about it here. Way to go DNR!
Where is the voice of the Audubon Society? -- all the other birding organizations? We're already hunting Mourning Doves. What's next? Goldfinches? Hummingbirds?

work

I have either to learn or have fun when I’m working. That’s my only guideline. If I’m not doing either, I just stop.

American Bittern

Until this Spring I had not seen a Bittern, much less photographed one. Last May, in a marsh just west of Milbank, South Dakota, I came upon this pair with obviously amorous intentions. Later, the same marsh disclosed what I presume to be a third bittern.

You can see why Bitterns are so difficult to find. Their camouflage is incredible.
