last Friday's afternoon in Kearney

We spent early Friday afternoon driving around as the spirit moved us. Here we had come upon a large flock of Snow Geese.

It was only after they took to the air that we realized how large this flock was.

At times the geese blocked the sun.

In the late afternoon we headed to some private property along the river to wait for the return of the Sandhill Cranes to the river flats. A video camera is probably the best way to capture the sights and sounds of the thousands and thousands of cranes.

They came in small groups at first . . .

. . . then larger groups closer to us . . .

. . . and closer yet.

As the sun was setting, the cranes flew in wave after wave . . .

. . . competing with a solitary airplane . . .

. . . and one another. It seemed that the darker it got, the more cranes would come in. For a glimpse of live action, click on this web cam.
Tomorrow, Saturday morning.
